In the UK, the term “mental heatlh nurse” is usually applied rather than “psychiatric-mental heatlh nurse”, the term used in the US. Mental heatlh nurses are responsible for implementing and reviewing the delivery of nursing care to people with mental heatlh problems.Steps to Becoming a Mental Health NurseTo become a registered mental heatlh nurse (RMN), the following is required:Completion of secondary school qualifications or equivalent.Completion of a nursing diploma or degree.Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the body responsible for regulating nursing practice.Once in a mental heatlh nursing position, the nurse must continue with their learning in order to ensure their knowledge is up to date (this is called Continuing Professional Development).
